Curriculum

The lower school program uses a variety of curriculum materials to provide a strong academic foundation for all students. The early grades, K3 through second, equip students with the phonetic skills necessary for basic word decoding. Beginning in second grade, there is a greater emphasis on comprehension, since phonemic awareness has been mastered.

Grades three through five develop reading strategies based on a reading workshop format. Students are required to employ higher level thinking skills through challenging novel studies. Students keep a reading log which can be downloaded from the Forms page. Vocabulary and spelling are linked to the examination of Greek and Latin word roots. In addition, the study of traits of writing is integrated with the application of grammar skills and linked to content areas such as Bible, social studies and science.  The study of mathematical concepts in grades K3 through 3 is taught by the use of "math manipulatives", supplemented with written assignments and math fact drills. Beginning in grade five, an advanced level of math is offered for students who excel in that discipline.

All students in the lower school study science and history from a biblical viewpoint. Science is the study of God's creation, and history is the study of God's plan for mankind. The study of each of these subjects provides many opportunities for the integration of biblical truth.

Students in all lower grades receive instruction in a variety of enrichment areas appropriate to the grade level. Such classes, termed "specials," include: Spanish, computer, physical education, and the fine and performing arts.
