Upper School Summer Course Requirements
There is course work in a number of Honors and Advanced Placement classes over the summer in addition to summer reading that is a requirement for every upper school student. Please review the following information carefully.
Summer Reading Requirements for all 9th-12th Grade Students
The capacity to read is a gift of God and is critical today, particularly for students in the Christian school. Christians must continue to be people of the Word. God Himself chose the Bible to communicate to us the truth of His love and grace. Philippians 4:8 charges the English teacher to cultivate in students a taste for what is "excellent", and a Christian literature program is one which teaches the students to think with a Christian worldview as they read and write.
At NCCS, our goal is to promote critical thinking skills and instill the student with tools necessary for reading, analyzing, and appreciating literature of high literacy merit, while at the same time cultivating the habit of and love of reading.
To emphasize the habit, love, and discernment of the Christian worldview, we list below the chosen literary selections for students in 9th - 12th grades and assign for READING ONLY over the weeks of summer. There are no questions or projects due by the first day of school.
English teachers will begin discussion of each of the assigned books in the order they are listed on the first day of school and will also begin testing on this day. Parents can assist by guiding the student through this reading process and discussing each selection as the student completes each reading.
Note: See the attached list of selections for each rising grade level. ISBN numbers are a recommendation. Students should choose the same title and author; however, if a different publisher is used, the ISBN may vary. Be sure to read the complete text, not an abridged version.
